TARRC and Dassault Systèmes Simulia Corp. present a joint paper at 174th Technical Meeting in Louisville - Kentucky, 14-16 October 2008.

A symposium on “Mechanics and Design of Elastomeric Materials and Structures” was chaired by Hamid Ahmadi, of the Engineering Design Unit of TARRC at the 174th Technical Meeting of The Rubber Division of The American Chemical Society in Louisville, Kentucky. TARRC and Simulia Corp., the supplier of Abaqus nonlinear Finite Element code, jointly presented a paper entitled “Dynamic Properties of Filled Rubber-Part III: Use of Nonlinear Kinematic Hardening Plasticity Material Models”.

In this paper two plasticity models, recently implemented in Abaqus, with non-linear hardening rules appropriate to filled rubber, were examined. The predictions of the viscoplastic models consisting of a viscoelastic material in parallel with either of these two plasticity models were compared with those predicted using the original “Overlay” model, described in an earlier paper presented at the 168th technical meeting. It was shown that there was a very good agreement between all three models when predicting the dynamic properties of filled rubber in simple shear mode of deformation. One of the plasticity models was identified as the better of the two examined; providing the user with a more computationally efficient approach than the Overlay model previously reported.
