TARRC welcomes the King & Queen of Malaysia to Brickendonbury

It was a day of festivities at the Merdeka Day Carnival 2010 on Saturday, 25th September 2010 in the grounds of the beautiful old English Mansion in country estate Brickendonbury (the Mansion is home to the Tun Abdul Razak Research Centre (TARRC) - the UK-based laboratory of the Malaysian Rubber Board), Hertford, England.

This year TARRC was honoured to welcome His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Al-Wathiqu Billah Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah, the King of Malaysia and Her Majesty the Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah, the Queen of Malaysia. Many other senior Ministers from the Malaysian government were also present and took part in the opening ceremony, as were the Chairman and Director General of the Malaysian Rubber Board.

Before the King struck the gong to open the carnival, he was given a brief presentation in the laboratories of the work carried out by TARRC to support the Malaysian rubber industry. The Queen was presented with a posy by Sophie Molloy, daughter of one of the staff at TARRC. The King also spent some time talking to a group of British Veterans of the Malayan campaign.

More than 2000 visitors to the Carnival enjoyed the unexpected sunshine and were entertained by the cultural performances, including a spectacular Lion Dance as well as traditional Malaysian dances. A highlight this year was a stand up comedy performance by Afdlin Shauki, the famous Malaysian writer, director, stage and screen actor, comedian, songwriter and presenter. There were beautiful crafts and products on display, and a free raffle for all included return tickets to Malaysia sponsored by Malaysian Airlines System (MAS).

True to Malaysian culture, the biggest attraction was probably the Malaysian food experience. On offer was authentic Malaysian cuisine, with an exciting range of flavours and culinary styles including freshly barbequed satay, roti canai and nasi lemak.

The Merdeka Day Carnival is held annually at Brickendonbury.
