TARRC Scientist Wins Research Poster Competition

David Lowe with his winning posterTARRC’s David Lowe, of the Advanced Materials & Product Development Unit, submitted a poster for the Annual Postgraduate Poster Competition on the 28th November 2006 at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). His poster won the Becker Prize for the best polymer project, along with a cash prize. Martyn Bennett of Avon Rubber made the presentation , in the newly refurbished Octagon at QMUL’s Mile End site. More pictures of the event are shown on the Queen Mary University website: www.materials.qmul.ac.uk

The poster summarised some of the research work David had undertaken at TARRC over the previous two years, which involved the use of organoclay nanoparticles as a reinforcing filler for natural rubber. The poster had been previously presented at the IOM Rubber in Engineering Group meeting "Elastomers in Engineering: Future Trends" on 23rd November 2006. Also, as winner of the Becker prize, David will have the opportunity to present his poster at ‘The Great British Research and R&D Show’ held in March at the House of Commons. (www.setforeurope.org).

David Lowe with Martyn Bennett of Avon RubberDavid explains “The initial reason for producing the poster was that it was a prerequisite for my PhD course. However, I wanted to impress the attendees at both the Poster Competition and the Rubber in Engineering group meeting so I spent considerable time getting it just right, with the help and advice of several TARRC colleagues. The hardest part was deciding what to leave out!”
