International Rubber Conference and Exhibition 2008
IRC & Exhibition 2008

At the end of last year the International Rubber Conference & Exhibition was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, one of the largest producers of natural rubber and the established centre of rubber technology, between 20th - 23rd October. TARRC was pleased to have six of our eminent rubber scientists and experts presenting papers at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC). TARRC was also participating at the IRC 2008 Technical Exhibition, located on the Malaysian Rubber Board stand in Ballroom 1. This featured an international showcase of rubber and rubber product manufacturers and suppliers and was the meeting place of the major players and buyers in the world's rubber industry.

The programme of the Conference focused on ‘meeting challenges and new frontiers’ and covered topics including computer simulation and advanced manufacturing. Speakers, experts, scientists and researchers from around the globe were there to share their knowledge and latest research findings on the development and opportunities available in the rubber industry. The topics covered in the conference were related to tyre technology, nanotechnology, advanced and future materials, rubber mechanics, rubber modification, latex science, rubber economics and productivity. Eight keynote lectures, 88 paper presentations and 30 poster presentations were delivered and discussed by 500 delegates.

The Conference was opened by the Honourable Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui, and gave an opening address stating that "one of the key success factors of the Malaysian rubber industry is the research and development programme as well as the effective technology transfer to smallholders and small and medium sized enterprises. However, further advancement must continue. The time has come for us to focus on intensifying research and development to produce green and environmental friendly rubber as well as improving further the quality of rubber products that can enhance the competitive edge of the said products".

The presentations given by TARRC Scientists at the IRC 2008 were as follows:

'Advanced Materials for a Smarter Future' - Keynote Speaker
Dr Andrew J. Tinker, Director of Research

'Development of Smart Engine Mounts'
Judith Picken (Co-authored by Hamid Ahmadi), Engineering & Design Unit

'Stress-strain Modelling of Filled Rubber'
Dr Alan Muhr, Head, Engineering & Design Unit

'Use of FEA to Estimate the Stiffness of Rubber Bushes'
Dr Julia Gough, Engineering & Design Unit

'Investigation of NR/Organoclay Nanocomposites using Advanced Microscopy Techniques'

David Lowe, Advanced Materials & Product Development Unit

'Ekoprena - A Polymer for High Performance Passenger Tyre Treads'

Dr Stuart Cook, Head, Materials Research & Development Division

TARRC’s scientists and technologists are in demand all over the world to present papers at workshops, seminars and high-profile international conferences. Their participation at these events not only raises the profile of TARRC, the MRB and the Malaysian industry, but allows them to keep up to date with the latest innovations in polymer R&D and technology.
